hello class..
we will be talking about the Panama Canal and its history involving the United States on Friday. You do not have an assignment due but I wanted to post the following question:
"The Canal is currently undergoing an expansion worth millions of dollars. Do you think this is a smart thing to do given the current state of the economy?"
please feel free to comment and input your ideas on this question.
In class we will briefly cover the history and then will discuss the expansion a little bit.

To make money you gotta spend money. The expansion of the Panama Canal I think is a great idea. First of all, expanding the canal will help create more work and help to employ people with jobs to actually construct it. Second, with an expansion in the canal, more boats will be able to go in and out making it more efficient. I think this will help to increase businesses in the nearby and surrounding areas around the canal, stimulating the economy even further.

ReplyDeleteSince 1914, the Canal has served the economically vital purpose of linking the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean, facilitating maritime trade for a multitude of countries. According to the Smithsonian Institution Library, approximately 14,000 ships passed through the Canal in 2008. Early estimates suggest an increased figure for 2009.
Consequently, expansion work on the Canal should be continued. The international exchange stands to lose more from an obsolete Canal than the cost of repairs.
In an economic time like this we need to fund massive public work projects. Think of the amount of jobs such a project could bring! it could be exactly what this economic situation needs to be to jump start itself back to life
